What We Do

Therapy

Andersonville Psychology offers psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families. We provided services that are evidence-based, trauma-informed, and affirmative. Our clinical team is diverse in training and in experience, and specializes in working with members of the LGBQIA* and TGNC populations, as well as alternative sexualities and relationships. Our work is not limited to gender and sexual diversity, and this does not have to be the main reason you are coming into therapy. We can also help with:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression and other mood-related diagnoses
  • Identity exploration and development
  • Relationships
  • Life transitions
  • Trauma
  • Grief

Reduced Fee Services:

  • Our team includes doctoral externs who are able to offer reduced-fee services, when their availability allows.
  • Intake and therapy sessions with doctoral externs are a maximum of $60.

Our partner practice, Chicago Mindful Psychotherapy, also includes a team of psychotherapists with varied specialties and expertise, and we may refer out to that staff when the Andersonville Psychology team’s caseloads are full.

Gender Affirmative Services

While it sucks to be the “gatekeeper” for trans and gender nonconforming (TGNC) folx to make decisions about their own healthcare and body, we try our best to follow an informed consent model when writing readiness letters in support of gender affirmative surgeries and HRT (hormone replacement therapy) treatments.

We are not here to decide if you are “trans enough.” Instead, we want to make sure you are informed, prepared, and have the information you need when making decisions about your next steps in your gender journey.

What can you expect?

  • Completion of a brief questionnaire prior to the first appointment, so the clinician can prepare the letter in advance.
  • 1-2 one hour appointments (currently being held virtually via telehealth) to conduct the clinical interview and gather any additional information needed for the letter. You and the clinician will work collaboratively to write the letter during the appointment(s) to make sure the information is an accurate reflection of your experience.
  • You will be provided with a signed copy of the letter during or soon after the appointment.
  • Insurance can be used to cover these services. We also offer sliding scale options, when available.

We follow the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care, which are often required for readiness letters.

Psychological Testing

People are referred for psychological testing for a variety of reasons. We offer the following testing services:

  • Intellectual testing
  • ADHD
    • Many struggle with concentration and attention issues. Psychological testing can help decipher if these difficulties stem from an attention-related diagnosis such as ADHD or are a consequence of anxiety and mood symptoms.
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Academic Accommodations
    • Schools often require psychological testing in order for students to receive accommodations and/or an IEP (Individualized Education Program). Students can receive support for a variety of reasons including ADHD, learning disabilities, adjustment due to trauma or other impactful life events, and ongoing mood and anxiety diagnoses.
  • Diagnostic clarification
    • This type of psychological assessment is particularly useful when diagnosis is unclear. Treatment recommendations are tailored specifically to each person’s presenting symptoms and background.

What can you expect?

  • At this time, we are conducting as much of the psychological evaluation as possible via telehealth and online questionnaires. However, there are some assessments that can only be completed in person. We take COVID-19 related safety precautions seriously and have instilled new measures to reduce the risk of transmission. Your clinician will discuss these measures with you directly.
  • Because we aim to provide thorough evaluations, the process will take several hours.
    • You will meet via telehealth for 1-2 appointments to conduct the clinical interview where the clinician will ask you questions pertaining to the reason you are seeking testing.
    • The in-person appointment lasts up to 2-3 hours.
    • You will be given electronic questionnaires and other measures that are specific to you.
    • Once all of the data is gathered and these appointments are complete, we aim to provide a comprehensive report to you within 2-3 weeks. You will then meet for a virtual feedback appointment to review the testing results
  • Testing services can often be billed through insurance, although coverage will look different for each plan. We also offer out-of-pocket rates for testing, depending on the referral question and extent of testing needed, as well as reduced rates, when available.
